David Lynch’s (Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive) masterful 1980 biopic of Joseph Merrick contains a magnificent, Oscar-nominated performance by John Hurt as the famously deformed man at the mercy of 19th century London.
Dr. Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins) discovers Joseph (John) Merrick working in a sideshow, his disfigured face and body viewed as freakish entertainment – but, bringing Merrick into his home, finds his rough exterior hides a refined and dignified soul.
Filmed in exquisite black and white, Lynch presents Merrick’s extraordinary life in all its pain and strangeness, exploring ideas of beauty and humanity to almost operatically compelling effect.
