The sun is blazing and Towner Cinema is back!
Join us this weekend for a double bill of Oscar-winning modern classics, Nomadland and Sound of Metal, and look forward to our summer splash of some of the hottest film releases of the last 18 months, including Minari, a tender and sweeping story set in Mid-West America, about what roots us, and Supernova, meanwhile, follows a couple intent on spending as much precious time together as they can, after one is diagnosed with dementia.
We also recommend Kelly Reichardt’s First Cow, which Towner and University of Sussex doctoral researcher Haley Moyse Fenning recently called “a much-needed restorative tonic” in her love letter to the film, and Judas and the Black Messiah, a truly gripping Black Panther drama based on a true story, with outstanding performances from Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield.
There will also be a rare opportunity to see on our screen a fresh 4k restoration of Ousmane Sèmbene’s Mandabi, the first-ever feature made in an African language – a stiletto-sharp satire on post-independence African nations and the shadow cast by colonialism. Another sure-fire hit will be Another Round, in which Martin (Mads Mikkelsen) and three of his friends, all weary high school teachers, embark on a risky experiment to maintain a constant level of intoxication throughout the workday.
