Freelands Award 2020 Shortlist

Posted on 9/09/2020

Freelands Foundation today announces the six visual arts organisations under consideration for the fifth annual Freelands Award. From Margate to Manchester, the selection celebrates exceptional museums and galleries across the country, as they reopen to the public following the Covid-19 pandemic.

We’re delighted to be one of the six UK galleries shortlisted for £100,000 Award, along with our friends Firstsite, MK Gallery, Modern Art Oxford, Turner Contemporary and the Whitworth. It’s incredible to be considered alongside some of the most exciting and creative forces in modern and contemporary art.

Each Freelands Foundation Award nominee has been invited to present a proposal for a solo exhibition with a mid-career female artist who may not yet have received the acclaim or public recognition that her work deserves. The winning organisation will then receive £100,000 to realise the exhibition, including a £25,000 fee for the exhibited artist.

The winner will be announced in December 2020 following selection by a jury including Elisabeth Murdoch (Founder and Chair, Freelands Foundation), artist Monster Chetwynd, curator and writer Juliana Engberg, Jenni Lomax (independent curator and former Director, Camden Art Centre) and Zoe Whitley (Director, Chisenhale Gallery).

The 2020 Award will be accompanied by the publication of the Freelands Foundation’s fifth report into ‘The Representation of Female Artists in the UK’. The report is written by Dr Kate McMillan and will include essays by art historian and writer Jennifer Higgie on women in art history and art critic and writer Hettie Judah on art and motherhood.
