In a striking departure from the huge paintings of London which formed the subject matter of his highly acclaimed exhibition at the National Gallery as Associate Artist in 2005, these new paintings take the vast, dark expanse of the North Sea as a central theme.
East Sussex Open brings together the best artists and makers from across the East Sussex region – from Rye to Eastbourne to Brighton & Hove.

In this large-scale exhibition, Towner will bring together the wide range of work by the influential and inspirational artist and designer Peggy Angus. The exhibition will include her early illustrations, portraits and landscape paintings, and her Modernist design work with wallpapers and tiles.

Towner celebrates the anniversary of the Modern Art for the Table exhibition at Harrods in 1934, with a display featuring some of the greatest names of British art including Paul Nash, Graham Sutherland, Laura Knight and Duncan Grant and a wider survey of artists working in British industry during the 20th century.

A fascination with the physical presence of light is embedded in UVA’s work and they have explored different ways of creating a structure from light. The series Vanishing Point employs perspective as both a tool and visual outcome to reshape, redefine and represent a space.

This year's Annual Schools Exhibition was the largest yet thanks to a partnership with the South Downs National Park and Learning Through Landscapes. Schools across Hampshire, West and East Sussex engaged in unique cultural and outdoor learning opportunities, leading to this exhibition inspired by Towner's permanent collection and our unique local landscape.

Explore the space between night and day, between the dog and the wolf, in a display curated by the artist/film maker John Skoog in collaboration with Bjarke Hvass Kure. Drawing from the time when night approaches as surely as sleep, when street lamps are lit and every being becomes his own shadow.

John Skoog works with film and video. He follows in the tradition of Scandinavian film through the use of stark landscapes and slow-pacing. The poetic use of the Swedish landscape and powerful studies of character and emotion evoke memories of film works by cinema greats such as Victor Sjostrom and Mauritz Stiller.
