Eastbourne Arts Circle Sculptural Commission
Towner Art Gallery and Eastbourne Arts Circle have commissioned a new work by Sussex artist Helen Turner to be displayed in the gallery’s window this summer.
Helen, who is based in Newhaven, is an artist working in painting and 3D mixed media. The motivation for the works she makes – in fabric, UV paint, wool, pigments and reflective materials – comes from things that she “sees and feels”. Helen has previously exhibited work in Sussex, London and Liverpool. For this new commission she will create Head, a large version of an existing marquette, that will make use of UV light so that passers-by can experience the sculpture 24 hours a day.
She explains, “This is a wrapped ball of feelings using paper, satin fabric and UV paint sitting on a block and will give the perception of a three dimensional painting from the outside of the building. I was really delighted to be chosen for this commission. It’s a perfect opportunity for this piece to be exhibited in an enclosed space with the window as an opening to the outside world. My work is about communicating an inner dialogue together with a sense of humour and fun.”
Helen was chosen from a group of applicants who applied to create an original 3D artwork to be displayed in window as part of Towner’s 2019 exhibition programme, marking ten years in the current purpose-built gallery. The judging panel who decided on Helen’s appointment included Lady Alex Gage of Firle, Joe Hill, Towner’s Director and Helena Birch, Director of Eastbourne Art Circle.
Joe Hill said, “Helen’s work is the perfect fit for this special summer commission. I look forward to our visitors experiencing her vivid, brightly coloured sculptural work that will literally light up this window of our gallery. We are pleased to be able to work with an artist in Eastbourne and with Eastbourne Arts Circle to bring this work to life as part of our 10th anniversary celebrations”
The commissioned work will be situated in the window that faces visitors as they arrive at Towner and is seen each season by thousands of Eastbourne residents and visitors. The commission also coincides with the launch of Eastbourne’s new Devonshire Quarter plaza and recently renovated Congress Theatre.
Head will be on view from July until mid-September during Towner’s busy summer programme, which includes exhibitions by Dineo Seshee Bopape and Phoebe Unwin, alongside the major outdoor Brewers Towner Commission by Lothar Götz.
