The Wizard of Oz + intro
This year we are proud to work with Eastbourne Rainbow to present this special screening of The Wizard of Oz to celebrate LGBT+ History Month 2020.
Beloved gay icon Judy Garland stars as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, whisked away (with her dog Toto) from their home in Kansas, to the magical land of Oz. Following the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard, they befriend a Scarecrow that needs a brain, a Tin Man missing a heart, and a Cowardly Lion looking for courage.
The film has long had a particular resonance for the queer community, with many reading it’s narrative as a coming out allegory and Dorothy’s friendship with the outcasts she meets in Oz as her ‘chosen family’. The film’s song – which became Judy Garland’s signature – Somewhere Over the Rainbow also contributed to the evolution of the LGBTQ rainbow flag.
