In Conversation: Start-Rite Shoes, A Good Fit

Start-Rite’s much-loved advertising illustrations evoke that first experience of being fitted for a new pair of shoes. Join Antonia Lucas in conversation with Peter Lamble, Chairman and Jenni Foster, Research and Innovation Manager for a discussion that leads us from the Start-Rite print archives to current shoe design for growing feet.

History of Start-Rite

Start-Rite was founded in Norwich by James Smith in 1792. Since then, Start-Rite has been dedicated to providing the best in design and comfort for children’s shoes, including the introduction of multi-width fittings in the 1940s. They were granted the Royal Warrant in 1955. Their famous advertising poster, Children’s Shoes Have Far to Go, was displayed in the London Underground between 1947 and 1967.
