First Thursdays

The new First Thursdays programme of events at Towner and other local venues continues on Thursday 5 December with a lively programme of live music, after-hours art, literature and warm hospitality across a range of independent venues, bars and cafes in the town centre. First Thursdays aims to develop a regular programme of evening events in the South Street and Grove Road area on the first Thursday of every month, animating the town centre in the evenings and encouraging more trade for our independent shops, cafes and venues.

At Towner David Nash: 200 Seasons will remain open until 8.00pm, with the added treat of free live original music by Chalk Horse Music performed within the ground floor gallery space between 5.15pm and 7.00pm. David Nash’s monumental wooden sculptures will provide an atmospheric and appropriate backdrop to the groups repertoire of traditional songs inspired by Sussex folklore, landscape and legend.

Our shop will remain open until 7.30pm with a special First Thursdays discount of 10% across all products*, providing an excellent incentive to get some gift shopping done early in a festive and relaxed environment. The cinema bar will be open from 5.00pm, serving warming Sussex punch to accompany the Sussex folk and some complimentary sweet treats.

In our auditorium from 7.30pm, the award-winning author and broadcaster Cole Moreton will present a live performance of words, visuals and songs exploring the world of his debut novel The Light Keeper and the real-life stories that inspired it. The performance is a collaboration with the musician David Perry and a number of artists inspired by the same spectacular landscape of the South Downs. Tickets for Cole Moreton’s performance are priced at £10, and are available here.

Why not make a night of it and enjoy the hospitality of other independent venues contributing to First Thursdays? The wonderful Bottle Grove, The Art House, Printer’s Playhouse, Vinyl Frontier and Gallery 27 will all be open late, ready with a warm welcome.
