Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat

Following last year’s blockbuster sell-out exhibition at the Barbican, Sara Driver, friend of Basquiat at the time, sensitively and intimately depicts the early years of magnetic visual artist Jean-Michael Basquiat and, more widely, the New York arts scene he exploded onto in the late 1980s.

From riding the subway all night, living on the streets of Manhattan, to selling postcards to Andy Warhol, Boom for Real uses archive footage and contemporary interviews to chart the early successes of one of the 20th century’s most important artists.

“The director Sara Driver pays the artist proper and enthralling tribute in this documentary, which is as distinctive as her fictional films” – Glenn Kenny, The New York Times
