Archiving the Artist: Harold Swanwick

The paintings of Harold Swanwick (1866-1929) offer a fascinating record of agricultural life on the South Downs in the early 20th century; Horses at Wilmington (Priory Farmyard) and Shepherd’s Cottage, Firle are on display in TEN alongside ephemera from the artist’s archive.

A significant body of material relating to Swanwick was gifted to Towner in 2013 and diligently archived by Andrew Forrest over the following year. Andrew will share key pieces and discuss how working with an artist’s archive can enhance our understanding of an artists working practice.
