With the support of Eastbourne Arts Circle, we are looking to commission a Sussex artist or maker to create an original 3D artwork to be displayed in the gallery’s iconic front window, marking ten years in our purpose-built gallery. The successful artist(s) will receive £1000 to cover the artist fee and materials. Towner will also cover transport and installation costs.

The commissioned work will be situated in the window that faces visitors as they arrive at Towner. The window is illuminated 24 hours a day and is passed each season by thousands of Eastbourne residents and visitors. The timing of the commission also coincides with the launch of Eastbourne’s new Devonshire Quarter plaza and recently renovated Congress Theatre.

The commissioned work will be on view from July until mid-September during Towner’s busy summer programme, which includes exhibitions by Dineo Seshee Bopape and Phoebe Unwin, and alongside the major outdoor Brewers Towner Commission by Lothar Götz.

This exciting opportunity for a regionally-based artist to be a special and prominent part of Towner’s tenth anniversary celebrations is open to all artists who live or work in the East or West Sussex regions and are aged 18+. Existing work will be considered.

The successful proposal will be chosen by Towner’s Director Joe Hill and two guest judges, to be announced shortly.

Application deadline: 19 May 2019

No fee for entry

All applicants will be notified by the end of May.

The space measures:

There are full length windows on 2 sides (width and depth side). Artists should note that the window is in direct sunlight and not climate controlled so will get very hot during the summer. Power supply available.

The installation will be negotiable between Towner and the artists once the commission has been decided, and installation will be managed by Towner Art Gallery.
