Finding Your Way
Posted on 2/07/2015
On Sunday 5 July, vinyl pavement stickers displaying original art created by Devonshire Ward residents will be going down on pavements across Eastbourne, as part of a project called Finding Your Way, managed by Creative Force.
The stickers will create 2 art trails leading starting from 2 points in Devonshire Ward and ending at Towner:
- Trail 1: Starting from Eastbourne Station, the trail will run along Terminus Road, Grove Road, South Street then College Road, to Towner
- Trail 2: Starting from Seaside Recreation Ground, the trail will run along Seaside, turning into Sea Houses Square, along the seafront and Carlisle Road, to Towner.
You’ll notice that the pavement stickers all have an abstract feel to them – that’s because they have been inspired by the work of British abstract artist William Gear, who is the subject of a major exhibition at Towner, William Gear 1915-1997: The painter that Britain forgot (18 July -27 September).
Once you arrive at Towner, you will have a chance to see the William Gear exhibition and check out Gear inspired bunting hanging in the cafe. These unique art trails will remain until Sunday 27 September for residents and visitors to enjoy and follow.
Professional artists Sheridan Quigley and Silke Savran worked with participants from Age Concern, Bourne Primary School’s Kangaroo class, Eastbourne Blind Society, Eastbourne Mencap and YMCA Eastbourne and Wealden to design the images.
It’s not too late to get involved, if you haven’t already! In July, Finding Your Way project artists Sally Colledge and Sheila Hay will be running free art workshops at Seaside Recreation Ground, Eastbourne for children over four years old and adults. The workshops will run on Saturday 18 July 10am-3.30pm and Sunday 19 July 11am-3.30pm.
The pieces created from the free workshops will be shown in a public ‘balloon cloud’ art installation at Towner from 21-26 July.
We hope that you are able to take part in this unique project, whether it’s following the trail, making some art or enjoying the incredible art work and views through town on your way to Towner.
