Queer Film: Tomboy

Settling into a new neighbourhood with her family on the outskirts of Paris, ten-year-old tomboy Laure begins to toy with her gender identity. Posing as a boy, she remakes herself as Mikäel and introduces herself to the other kids on the block.

Family Film: Brave

On learning that her parents, King Fergus and Queen Elinor, plan to marry her off to one of the sons of her father’s allies, Princess Merida flees the castle. Bargaining with a witch for a spell to change her fate, Merida is granted a magic cake, which, when she feeds it to her mother, turns her into a bear. Struggling to carve a path for herself, Merida has inadvertently caused chaos in the kingdom.

Family Film: The Breadwinner

The Breadwinner, adapted from Deborah Ellis’ well-regarded young-adult novel, tells the story of eleven-year-old Parvana living in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. After her father is wrongfully imprisoned, Parvana must cut her hair short and dress like a boy to provide for her family. Drawing inspiration from the fantastical stories she tells for her little brother, Parvana sets out to find her father and reunite her family.
