Film: The Piano
A stunning 4K restoration of Jane Campion’s multi-award-winning classic, starring Holly Hunter, Anna Paquin and Harvey Keitel.
Long overdue for revisiting in cinemas, Jane Campion’s multi-award winning classic returns to screens to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its release. With a stunning digital restoration approved by Campion herself, this is the perfect way to experience the director’s definitive work.
Holly Hunter gives a majestic performance as Ada, a mute Scotswoman and talented pianist who arrives in New Zealand with her daughter Flora (Anna Paquin) for an arranged marriage to frontiersman Alistair Stewart (Sam Neill) to whom she takes an immediate dislike. Under the pretence of piano lessons, she strikes up a very different relationship with Alistair’s overseer, George Baines (Harvey Keitel). The film was awarded the Palme d’Or at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival, making Jane Campion the first woman to win the festival’s highest honour.
“Ms. Campion somehow suggests states of mind you’ve never before recognized on the screen.” – The New York Times
Women in Film
In the centenary year of the 1918 suffrage act, celebrating women’s voices has never been more important. With this in mind, we present a season dedicated entirely to women in film. All the films in this season are directed or co-directed by women, and most are female-focused in their narrative.
