The Holy Mountain

To accompany his exhibition, We Stared at the Moon from the Centre of the Sun, Haroon Mirza curates a season of classic occult and sci-fi films featuring solar and lunar symbolism.

Dir: Alejandro Jodorowsky, 1973 (18) 115 mins

Directed, written, co-edited and co-scored by Jodorowsky, who also contributed to the set and costume design, The Holy Mountain was famously produced by The Beatles’ manager Allan Klein and financed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The epic, dazzling, somewhat incoherent, surrealist fantasy explores the occult, alchemy, consumerism and militarism. A scandal when it was first released, the film became a regular on the midnight movie circuit in New York (a scene kick started by Jodorowsky’s previous film, El Topo).
