The Children Act
Written by Ian McEwan, based on his own novel of the same name, The Children Act tells the story of a High Court judge, faced with a uniquely challenging case, in the midst of a marital crisis. Emma Thompson stars, opposite Stanley Tucci, as Fiona Maye, a brilliant and widely admired judge who must decide the fate of a young man with cancer in need of a blood transfusion, opposed by his parents for religious reasons.
We are led to understand that Fiona’s struggle with this case is bound up in her own childlessness, and an unorthodox hospital bedside visit has a profound impact on them both, stirring strong new emotions in the boy and long-buried feelings in her.
“A soulful and sophisticated adult drama that peers into the void between the beauty of ideals and the cost of living by them” – David Ehrlich, indieWire
