Family Film: The Breadwinner
From the same studio as The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea, comes a tale of strength and courage, beautifully told through bewitching animation.
The Breadwinner, adapted from Deborah Ellis’ well-regarded young-adult novel, tells the story of eleven-year-old Parvana living in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. After her father is wrongfully imprisoned, Parvana must cut her hair short and dress like a boy to provide for her family. Drawing inspiration from the fantastical stories she tells for her little brother, Parvana sets out to find her father and reunite her family.
Oscar-nominated for Best Animated Feature earlier this year.
“The Breadwinner proves nothing short of exceptional, celebrating as it does a young woman who faces adversity head-on — and who relies on her own creativity, both as a storyteller and in practical situations, to adapt to whatever obstacles she faces.” – Variety
Women in Film
In the centenary year of the 1918 suffrage act, celebrating women’s voices has never been more important. With this in mind, we present a season dedicated entirely to women in film. All the films in this season are directed or co-directed by women, and most are female-focused in their narrative.
