Film: I Am Not A Witch
Eight-year-old Shula is accused of witchcraft in Rungano Nyoni’s critically-acclaimed debut feature. Faced with the options of accepting her supernatural branding and living a tethered life as a sorceress, or to cutting her ties with local tradition to be transformed into a goat that may be killed and eaten for supper, Shula ends up at the local “witch camp”. What follows is a bewilderingly funny tragi-comic tale that veers into magical surrealism.
Winner of the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.
“As for Nyoni, her ability to blend cruel humour, pointed satire and empathetic anger to produce something touched by tragic transcendence is astonishing.” – The Observer
Women in Film
In the centenary year of the 1918 suffrage act, celebrating women’s voices has never been more important. With this in mind, we present a season dedicated entirely to women in film. All the films in this season are directed or co-directed by women, and most are female-focused in their narrative.
