Foreign Language: Mustang

Mustang follows the lives of five sisters living in a remote Turkish village, railing against expectations as their family’s enforced rules become increasingly strict, until finally marriage arrangements begin to be made. Beautiful, hazy and suspenseful, the film is part coming-of-age tale, part prison-break drama.

This is Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s debut feature and was nominated for a clutch of covetable awards including Best Foreign Language Picture at the Oscars and Caméra d’Or at Cannes 2015.

“With its rooted sense of place and community, and rebellious spirit, this is an accomplished and engaging debut.” –The Guardian

Women in Film
In the centenary year of the 1918 suffrage act, celebrating women’s voices has never been more important. With this in mind, we present a season dedicated entirely to women in film. All the films in this season are directed or co-directed by women, and most are female-focused in their narrative.
