Finding Vivian Maier
Finding Vivian Maier tells the fascinating story of secretive street photographer Vivian Maier, whose work, comparable with heavy weights Henri Cartier-Bresson and Diane Arbus, was never seen during her lifetime. Filmmaker John Maloof hit the jackpot back in 2007 when, at an auction, he picked up a box of undeveloped negatives by a mysterious woman named Vivian Maier. After tracking down her storage space, he found himself the owner of a staggering archive of street photography, all taken by Vivian as she worked as a nanny in New York and Chicago during the 1950s, dragging her charges around as she snapped photos on her Rolleiflex. The film follows Maloof’s efforts to catalogue, archive and publish Maier’s body of work, and tries to find out more about her intriguing life.
‘Finding Vivian Maier is a tantalising and utterly fascinating film’ – Geoffrey Macnab, The Independent
