Driving Devonshire Forward & Coastal Communities Fund

During 2015 and 2016, Towner Art Gallery has been at the forefront of several exciting initiatives to build the cultural and visitor economy offer in Devonshire Ward, as part of an Eastbourne-wide partnership led by Eastbourne Borough Council.

Coastal Culture Trail

The Coastal Culture Trail is a joint marketing and tourism initiative between Towner and De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill and Jerwood Gallery, Hastings.

Project Coordinator Jessica Courtney Bennett continues to work with local businesses and community groups to develop activity along the trail, particularly encouraging sustainable travel and local food and drink.

Jessica is also the first point of contact for marketing and communications for Towner’s cultural activity in the Devonshire Ward which aims to encourage more visitors and tourists to the Ward to boost business trade.

Finding Your Way

This signage art project was delivered by Eastbourne arts production company Creative Force on behalf of Towner and created visual art trails made by local people throughout Devonshire Ward.

Artists Sheridan Quigley (lead project artist) and Silke Savran worked with five local groups in Devonshire Ward (Age Concern, Bourne Community School, Charlie’s Youth Centre, Eastbourne Blind Society and Eastbourne and District Mencap) to design unique, temporary  pavement vinyls to direct people to Towner from two starting points in Devonshire Ward: Sea Houses Square and the Railway Station.

Creative Force artists Sally College and Sheila Hay ran pop-up drop-in workshops on Seaside Recreation Ground in Devonshire Ward where they helped members of the public  design and make their own pieces which formed a public installation art work at Towner.
