Willie Doherty: Disturbance

Twice Turner Prize nominated artist Willie Doherty is renowned for his video installations and photographs. Disturbance surveys his works from the mid 1980s to today - including his most recent video work, Ancient Ground, shot last year on the peat bogs of County Donegal. Doherty's work begins with the land; showing it as contested and conflicted, exploring its relationship to memory and subjectivity. Though rooted in his native Northern Ireland, Doherty’s art has a universal appeal.  Read more »

A Point of Departure

Inspired by our locality, this Towner Collection display explores the edge of the Sussex landscape. Our coastline has long been an inspiration for artists – from Edward Bawden, John Piper and Eric Ravilious to Turner Prize winner Wolfgang Tillmans. Also featuring the hidden works of forgotten Sussex artist Eric Slater.  Read more »

Our 2012 annual schools exhibition explores local and cultural pride. Towner Collection works depicting Sussex scenes - by artists such as Alfred Wallis - hang beside artwork by pupils from the region. This exhibition has been kindly funded by NADFAS and East Sussex County Council. Read more »
