Fiona Rae: Maybe you can live on the moon in the next century

One of the original artists in Freeze, the 1988 Damien Hirst-curated group show which launched the Young British Artists, Fiona Rae has become one of the leading painters of her generation. Described by the Guardian as “a Jackson Pollock for the digital age”, her distinctive body of work – full of restless energy, humour and complexity – has set out to challenge the modern conventions of painting. Read more »

People and Portraits

Every portrait painting tells a story, connecting us to people across time and place. This collection display encompasses a variety of images and styles, including historical and formal portraiture, narrative scenes and self portraits. Key Towner Collection artists such as Edward Bawden, David Bomberg and Christopher Wood are represented, whilst some intriguing lesser known artists and works are also revealed. Read more »

Annual Schools and Colleges Exhibition 2013

11 May – 9 June 2013 (free)

Over 1,000 children and young people from across Sussex have been inspired by People and Portraits to create their own original portraits, in a range of media. For the first time Towner’s education and outreach groups have also contributed to the exhibition. Collection Store Tours

This is a unique opportunity to view the Towner Collection behind the scenes, and learn about how an art collection is stored and conserved. Our renowned collection holds more than 4000 works, which when not on display are stored in our state of the art Collection Store.  More details »

Artsmark Training

Culture Shift, as an Artsmark training agency, is delivering free training courses to help schools and other educational settings prepare their Artsmark applications. Artsmark is Arts Council England’s flagship programme which enables schools and other organisations to evaluate, strengthen and celebrate their arts and cultural provision. It is delivered by Trinity College London and 10 regional Bridge organisations drive participation. More details »

WANTED - FdA Digital Media Design Graduate Showcase

WANTED is an event showcasing the design work of graduates from the FdA Digital Media Design course at Sussex Downs College. Taking place at Towner, the event will feature numerous examples of the students’ work across a variety of mediums, including print, time-based and web.  More details »

Digital Landscapes: Inspired by the South Downs

Saturday 22 June

Children will explore the use of drawing, painterly process and photography to develop imaginary landscapes – with Joseph Norman of Furry Tree Animation. Everyone will receive a print of their own work, and the combined artworks will be projected and displayed online as an interactive landscape. More details »
